One of our favorite gadget sites (Red Ferret Journal) has a bit about a $100+ digital magnifier - pricey and something not a lot of us will buy, but you could use our past tip to make your portable digital magnifier with your cell phone camera...Link.

I've heard about a few cameras for the elderly with big buttons and a simple inferface, maybe they could add a hardware/software feature like this to magnify things or as always make your own - After all we always have our cell phones with us!
